E-Democracy has started to add a tracking parameter to links within forums.e-democracy.org, so we can get a better sense of how our users are navigating through the site. The idea is that in the short term we can use regular expressions in Google Analytics to see the traffic that is being generated by certain links. In the long term, we can consider building some analytics into GroupServer (though at the moment I don't know if that's worth the effort considering what Google Analytics offers for free.)

rb

The tracking parameter that is being used is rb - short for referred by. Quite simply, this is added to links in the code and templates, in the same way that any other URL parameter is added: ?rb=<value> -or- &rb=<value>.

values

The following values are currently being used:

  • group-home-us-bar : The Us Bar that is displayed on group home pages.
  • topic-us-bar: The Us Bar that is displayed on topic pages.
  • topicsdigest-daily: The daily topics digest email.
