Knight News Challenge 2007 drafting

From E-Democracy.org

This page is now closed to editing. We've submitted 11 applications. If all of them make it all the way, we will get all of their money. :-) We will add links to the proposals on the Knight site where you can view and rate them. Help us out by recommending the proposals of ours that you really like.

In 2006 E-Democracy.Org submitted 3 proposals to the Knight News Challenge. Two of them made it to round two - Presidential E-Debates and Ideas Potpourri.

Steven Clift, Board Chair of E-Democracy.Org won with the small Ideas Potpourri proposal. He will be blogging a bridge between online citizen engagement and citizen media for a year on the PBS MediaShift site. E-Democracy.Org also hosts the private online group for all the round one winners.

Our plan for the 2007 round, which is due in October, is to submit a number of innovative proposals and see which ideas make it to round two. While most if not all will fail in the near term, there will be dozens of other funding and partnership opportunities to explore. This makes it worth the effort.

While anonymous speech has its place online, so does civil speech with the effective use of real names.

E-Democracy.Org proposes a partnership with ten media outlets interested in piloting real name strategies adapting our successful Issues Forum model. The approach will be generalized to blog comments, story comments, and online forums.

A preliminary phase will include a research with an academic partner to survey public and local community leader attitudes toward different styles of online speech geared toward local communities. This baseline data will inform a post-deployment evaluation of civility, deliberativeness, and agenda-setting through online interaction.

In phase one, a balanced and diverse citizen panel of active news consumers wil be gathered to explore and articulate their expectations as well as make specific recommendations. In phase, two a survey of the public and journalists will seek to quantify support for principles and recommendations.

Example recommendations might include ensuring the ability of online readers to comment directly online to the reporter or editor of every story including wire services or quality guidelines for online comments and the use of real names or aliases.

Why are you the best person or organization to develop this project? * (2075 characters maximum, approximately 325 words)

E-Democracy.Org is about results. We created the world's first election information and news website in 1994. Our "built to last" model is building momentum and has attracted over $300,000 in recent investment after a decade of all volunteer activity.

Our international network of local citizen-based groups promotes the active use of democratic information, news, and conversation online. In expansion mode, our current ten communities are in Minnesota, Massachusetts, England (soon Scotland), and New Zealand. Our low cost model is based on building volunteer capacity not burning cash. By digitally connecting citizens in a non-partisan manner, we create demand for local information and news online. Our approach is to promote distributed effort and add value through improved local navigation, aggregation, and democratic accountability through conversation.

The two main leaders of E-Democracy.Org are Steven Clift and Tim Erickson. Clift is a newly selected social entrepreneurship Ashoka Fellow. He is an international speaker (26 countries to date) on the Internet and citizen participation. He is blogging a bridge between the world of online citizen engagement and online news and citizen media for the Knight News Challenge. Erickson is a talented online facilitator with direct experience in local online citizen engagement in our Issues Forum as well as online candidate debates. Our current project manager for funded initiatives, he is also involved in citizen media and digital inclusion outreach efforts of our St. Paul chapter.

E-Democracy.Org is a 501.c3 organization deeply committed to sharing its lessons widely and to the use of open source software. More details from: http://e-democracy.org and http://blog.e-democracy.org
