[edit] Matrix of qualities/qualifications for to look for in board members
I'm creating a matrix of qualities/qualifications that we'd like to look for as we expand the board. This page is public, so please do not use this page to suggest specific names. Current thinking, is that we are interested in a board of up to 13 members, recognizing that not all will be available for every call/online meeting.
We currently have 8 members of the board, 2 of whom wish to retire. Assuming that 2 retire, we'll need to recruit 7 additional members to reach 13.
I'm creating a list of qualities or qualifications, along with a target number of individuals (some individuals will meet multiple criteria) that we'd like to bring each of these qualities to the board:
(NOTE: I'm not putting in numbers, but I suggest that we pay close attention to gender, cultural, and political diversity. I think it very important, that as a non-partisan organization our board include individuals with clear ties and connections to organizations that help balance a perceived "liberal" bias that organizations like our often struggle against.)
- From outside of the US (5 or more)
- From the UK (2 or more)
- From Continental Europe (1 or more)
- From the US, but outside of Minnesota (3 or more)
- Lawyer with relevant legal experience (1 or more)
- Academics (3 or more)
- Experience as an elected official (1 or more)
- Leadership experience on non-profit boards, other than E-Democracy.Org (5 or more)
- Accounting/Financial Experience (1 or more)
- Strong connections to other civic organizations (3 or more)
- "Techies" with strong understanding of technology issues we face. (2 or more)
- "Non-Techies" who haven't a clue about the technology and don't care, but are interested in how its used (2 or more)
- Background or strong interest in issues related to "Digital Divide" or "Digital Justice" (1 or more)
- Public relations or marketing background (1 or more)
- Strong Fundraising background/experience (2 or more)
